I bought a Microsoft (Pharos) GPS-360 and plugged it into Com3/USB and fired up navigator free on Surface pro 3. It found the GPS but when I go to a map it says 'Waiting for valid GPS ". I have gone to an open area and waited an hour. Nothing. Do I need to install something else? Should Navigator free with GPS dongle work on a Surface Pro 3?
I finally resolved the issue. This might help others as Surface Pro 3 becomes more popular. I had to install a program to help it recognise the external GPS dongle. It is called GPSDirect. This problem apparently occurs for both Windows 7 and Windows 8. The Win 7 version fixes Win 8 too. After I installed it everything immediately worked as expected!!
