You could also look at your speedometer :)

you can edit settings.xml (default_settings.xml), line
<trail_length>200</trail_length>

I think that color is hardcoded in code. So user has no chance to change it

What is the purpose of this trace anyway?

sometimes highlighted route is crossing or returning, so you know where you came from
this was introduced some time ago on request of users :-)

I find this feature quite useful.

A little bit old fashioned though, as the main navigation arrow, but I don't really mind about that.

They don't disturb me at all. They are also an indication of the speed I'm going at. The farther they are, the faster I'm going.

So, there is not an option of changing the color for anything appeared on screen.
Maybe on later versions...
