Converting Map Data Ourselves

what is the reasons for not offering an opensource/application where we can convert the osm data ourselves?, that way we could do daily or weekly downloads and also check to see how it translates to working on the device. if we were to see an error its quicky and easily fixed on OSM site and when the official monthly conversion happens we know 99% of it will be perfect!
